The writer's mission!

by Red Johnson on 08/24/18

A writer must write about something they know.  Obvious, correct?  Well, you may be surprised to learn how many do not stay on the subjects of their knowledge.  In fact, it is this author's opinion the writers "mission" for writing is more important than possessing a great knowledge on any subject.  Knowledge can be acquired through research.   A writing purpose/mission plays to the writers passion for writing.  In my opinion that can produce valuable writing work product.

So, you ask what has been my "mission"/purpose for writing? Here it is:
1.  To solve mysteries about popular western era characters.
Sample: Billy the Kid Peter Pan of the Old West
a.  Where was he born?
b.  Who was his father and what happened to him?
c.  What was the real character traits of his mother Catherine McCarty?
d.  Why, where & when did the McCarty family move from New York,
      Indianapolis, Indiana, Wichita, Kansas, etc.?
e.  How & where did the Kid learn the Spanish language?
f.  Why did the family end up in Silver City?
g.  Why did the Kid turn to crime for a living?
Purpose goes to need.  In this case one of the most famous western characters had little research and writing about his early life.  My mission was to fill the need for such a book.

New writers

One of the most common statements made to me is: "Some day I want to write a book."

My response is: "Someday" has arrived!"  To be a writer one must write!  Set a goal of writing three pages a day.  Any day you fail simple tell yourself: "I'm not a writer!" Look yourself in the mirror before going to bed and ask yourself if you are writer.  Did you find the time to write today?  Once you begin to form the habit (habits are established in 21 days) it will be easy to be a writer.  The longer you write, the more skillful you will become.  Take writing classes, join writer groups, and have the time of your life.  If you need help with anything; you will find fellow authors willing to share their experiences.  As with all forms of art; you will find your style of writing, and that is very rewarding.

Published authors alert!
I have a good friend who has worked many years on a book.  His research is impeccable.  It is presently over 1200 pages of essentially research work product.  The subject is the hostile Indian tribes of Texas, and their attempts to scare the Europeans and Mexicans out of what is now Texas through terrorism tactics.
My friend is 83 years young and this is his first book.  He needs an experienced published author to co-author the book and get this important work done.  I have too many of my own books committed to complete. I just can't stop that work, or I would in a heart beat!
In the proper format every university & college in Texas would have it in their history curriculum.   In a book series; all western history enthusiasts would love it!  If I were taking this project on it would be a series of 7 books at 200 gross pages each with dynamite covers.
Hollywood would love that series because it contains all the big names  i.e. the Bowie brothers, Sam Houston. Stephen Austin, etc. etc..
I want no part of the rewards! I am doing this for a friend.  He deserves it!

This is my first attempt to establish a meaningful Blog site; for those of you that would like to chat about anything in the 18th Century.  Lets get to talking!

I love to solve mysteries and/or find new information about historical characters.  It has been my passion for over twenty years to correct wrongs, discover new things about these people, or just be entertained by new adventures of them.
